Motherhood is not always a walk in the park, it can be really hard. There is absolutely nothing in the world that can prepare you for becoming a new mom and the demands of caring for a new little baby. You have sleepless nights, you are tired, you can feel disconnected from the world, and you can have very little time for yourself. This phase of motherhood and this time in your baby’s life will not last forever, but it can be difficult to remember that when you have been up all night.
We would like to offer a few suggestions of ways that you can make this time a little more enjoyable for you, the new mom.
Go for a walk
Even if it is for just 20 minutes, getting out of the house and getting a few moments in the outdoor air will make you feel re-energized while getting in some good for you physical activity as well.
Join a playgroup
Getting together with other neighbourhood moms for a playgroup is a great way for both you and baby to get out of the house, make new friends and socialize. Little Lotus has an online mom community that also meets up throughout the city every month. You can find more information about the Mom Community with Little Lotus here.
Get a coffee with friends
Head to your nearest coffee shop to catch up with your friends. Learning what everyone has been up to over your favourite coffee is a wonderful way to reconnect with your friends for some grown up chit chat.
Get a massage
I do not know a single person that does not like a massage. Take some “mommy time” and book a massage for yourself and come back to your family feeling recharged. Our favourite place to go is Anna Belanger & Associates. Their registered massage therapists are warm and welcoming and always take care to make sure you are relaxed and comfortable.
Get your hair done
Nothing will make you feel renewed more than a nice new haircut. Taking the time to pamper yourself at a salon while sipping a coffee or tea and reading your favourite book or magazine, is one of the best ways to pamper yourself. Letting you come back to your family relaxed and revitalized.
Take a nice long bath
One of my favourite ways to spend some “me time” is taking a nice long hot soak in the tub. I like to bring along my tablet, a good book or some magazines and a beverage of my choosing. I add some Epsom salts along with my favourite oils or bubble bath, and then I sit and soak, letting everything else drift away outside the bathroom door. Granted this one can sometimes be hard to do in our house with a curious toddler that needs to know what everyone is doing at all times, so I usually wait until after bedtime if I am treating myself to a bath that day.
We hope that you can choose your favourites from this list (or even choose them all) to help you get through your postpartum period a little easier. Taking time for yourself and making sure to fill up your own cup is crucial so that in turn, you can be a better mom to your family.
