We know that holidays can be a stressful time with so much going on. We often get over-scheduled with kids parties, events at school, work potlucks, etc., and lots of parties mean indulging in a lot more alcohol and food.
Physical activity can not only help with holiday indulgences, but it can also help you to cope better with feeling overwhelmed and stressed during the holiday season. Here are a few great ways to stay active to relieve stress and reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed during the holidays:
Yoga. A pose like legs up the wall can be used for relaxation and is easy to do by just lying on the floor or your bed and placing your legs up against the wall or headboard. You could also use a pose like downward dog to build strength and stamina. This is a time to try to clear your mind, none of this making lists in your head or planning what you are going to make for dinner business. While in these poses don’t forget to focus on your deep breathing.
Go for a walk. It doesn’t need to be far, even just around the block. Going for a walk is a great way to get your blood pumping and to get in a bit of activity during the holidays. Another great tip is to take the stairs when you can, in the mall always opt for the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. You can even get the whole family involved by getting out to take a peek at the Christmas lights in your neighbourhood, or other favourite areas in your town.
Get out in nature. Take your boots, snowshoes, cross country skis, anything and get out in nature. There is almost nothing better to de-stress and calm down then to be out in nature. The sounds of the outdoors and the fresh air are the perfect remedies to feeling overwhelmed. Bonus points if you bring bird seed with you to feed the little woodland creatures.
Dancing. This can be easily made into a family affair and can even be done during your holiday events. Having relatives over? Why not turn up the tunes and cut a rug. Or if you have had a busy day out why not put on your favourite playlist and have an after dinner dance party with the kids, or the cat?
Online workouts. We are now in the day and age where with a click of a mouse you can easily find workouts online. Online workouts are super convenient, you can get your workout in on your own time and fit it into your own schedule, plus you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home, so you can get your workout in no matter the weather .
If you do any (or all) of these activities during the holidays, you will be sure to reduce your stress levels and get rid of that feeling of being overwhelmed, all while getting fit and even getting the chance to make holiday memories or new traditions.
Enjoy the Holidays!!
