Prenatal Yoga Poses | Virabhadrasana 1 | Warrior 1

This weeks Prenatal Pose is a version of the Warrior. Open and strengthen your hips as you play with Warrior 1. Challenge: Try to hold Warrior 1 for as long as your body is able to do so. The mind likes to jump in sometimes when it is challenged and tells you to move out of any posture that may be unfamiliar or create some discomfort. Continue to focus on your breath and stay in this posture until your BODY tells you to move, not your MIND.

Warrior 1

Description / Explanation

  • From Tadasana step one foot to the back of the mat
  • Turn the back foot out on a 45 degree angle and press all sides of the foot into the ground
  • Lift up through the chest and encourage the hips to face forward
  • Bend through the front leg encouraging that leg to come to a 90 degree angle
  • Lift the arms up over head and take the gaze up

Benefits

  • Massages liver and spleen
  • Improves digestion
  • Assists in increasing balance
  • Can relieve low back discomfort and tailbone pain
  • Opens and strengthens hips

Contraindications

  • During bouts of morning sickness
  • High blood pressure
  • Swelling in legs

Notes

This posture can be done using a stability ball or chair if the expectant mother would like support.
