Prenatal Yoga Poses | Malasana | Garland Pose

This weeks Prenatal Pose is all about getting LOW! Garland Pose, or low squat, is a great position to practice during your pregnancy and a lot of women find this position helpful when it comes time to birth baby.

 

Asana (Sanskrit)

Malasana

Posture (English)

Garland Pose

Description / Explanation

  • From table pose bring the right foot up towards the right hand
  • Bring the left foot up towards the left hand
  • Feel the pelvis become weighted towards the earth
  • Place the hands onto the earth or at the heart centre in prayer pose
  • Bring body weight slightly forward

Benefits

  • Pelvis opens and relaxes
  • Excellent position for birthing
  • Encourages baby to get deep down into the pelvis
  • Massages internal organs

Contraindications

Those with knee problems may wish to be supported or require modification.
Expectant mothers with placenta previa or premature labour may be required to avoid this position.

Notes

Can place a block or bolster underneath the buttocks to help support the pelvis
Partner can help support the mama to be.
