Feeling Anxious With Back To School Transitions?

September 4, 2020

Feeling anxious as we move into the Fall and all the decisions that are falling on us as parents?

Are your little ones feeling anxious with new transitions or from being social distanced for the last 6+ months?

FIRST….

  1. Please know that you are not alone xo
  2. Please don’t feel embarrassed if you are feeling this way xo

Often times our little ones can show they are anxious by….

  • Crying more than usual or at times where you might think there is “nothing to cry about”
  • Say they have a tummy ache or a sore belly
  • Show signs of being “grumpy” or “upset”
  • Show signs of withdrawal
  • Show signs of hyperactivity or a lot of excitement

So…..you see….our children can show us that they are anxious in many different ways. This can be hard for us parents to really be able to understand HOW our children are feeling, right?!

Here is what is most important…..

You know your child best. Trust your gut. Trust your instincts. If you see your child interacting with you in a way that they don’t normally or if they are all of a sudden withdrawn or seem to be showing signs emotionally that they don’t normally follow your instincts mama.

Create a conversation with them. Ask them questions. Share with them how you feel in different scenarios. Story tell with them. You might find when you do this that they share info with you or their feelings and thoughts.

So, what can you do if you notice that your child is feeling anxious (or you?!)

  1. Create a safe and trusted space for them.
  2. Within that space share with them, in an age appropriate manner, that there is no judgement. That you want them to feel comfortable sharing with you.
  3. Some children thrive well and like to share their feelings and thoughts through play and role playing.
  4. Create a routine so your child knows what to expect and is familiar with what your days will look like as you transition into the Fall.
  5. Invite calming activities into your home such as yoga, mindfulness, breathing techniques, etc.
  6. Don’t hesitate to reach out. There are many professionals who can help you and your family.

We wish you and your family well as we all move through this transition into Fall together. Whether you are at home, have little ones going back to daycare, in person at school, virtual learning or homeschooling know that we SEE YOU and we are sending you warm hugs. xo
