Guest Post by Little Lotus Instructor, Heather Logan
Anyone have a little one who loves Elsa, Anna, Olaf and Sven? Hear a lot of “Let it Go” and “Do you want to build a snowman?” Make your little yogis’ day by sharing some Frozen-inspired yoga with them!
In January we held a Frozen-themed yoga family workshop at Sweet Spot Yoga, where we acted out all the great scenes of the movie: dancing like Hans and Anna, building yoga snowmen, “Letting it Go”, creating beautiful snowflakes and imposing icicles, and even rolling around like the love expert rock trolls!
Here are some of our favourite “Fro-ga” poses you can practice together at home. Don’t forget to play the soundtrack while doing it to make it that much more fun!
Deep breaths in and out. Ooh, it’s cold out here! Can you see your breath?
Warm up your ears and cheeks! Rub your hands together to build lots of heat in your palms, then place them over your cheeks, eyes, nose.
Make Snow Angels
Lay on your mat, spread your arms and legs wide, and move your arms up and down and legs in and out, like you’re creating an angel shape in the snow.
Be Queen Elsa, sitting on her Throne
Chair pose, with hands on head, holding your crown
Be a beautiful Snowflake
Hold hands with Mom or Dad and spread your arms and legs wide like a star. Or better yet, get the whole family involved and make a big snowflake on the ground!
Let it Go
Think of something that makes you sad or angry that you don’t want to worry about anymore. Play the song “Let it Go”, and dance around, sending whatever you don’t need out into space, just letting it all go!
Be a reindeer
Mom or Dad sets up in Table position, little yogi climbs on their back, sits up, and makes antlers with their hands. Hi, Sven!
Roll like a troll
Lay on your back and pull your knees into your chest. Give yourself a hug. Now roll side to side and back and forth, just like the trolls!
Build a Snowman
Mom or Dad curls up in Child’s pose, little yogi climbs on their back and does the same. Ta da! A towering snowman!
Cooling breaths
Sit down and stick your tongue out. Breathe in through your mouth, feeling the cool air moving over your tongue. Breathe out through your nose.
Relaxation
Lie down, get warm and comfy with your little yogi. Relax your body and imagine you’re dressed very warmly and you’re out in the snow. It’s so quiet and peaceful. The Earth looks beautiful. The snow is resting on your face and tongue. There is no one else around, except you and your little yogi. You are both completely peaceful.
This is a fun sequence to do as is, or you can add to it anything you like. We also had fun making up our own Frozen poses in the middle. Let your imagination soar!
