When we begin to teach children how to meditate we first start with getting them to focus on an object and to slowly start to focus solely on that object. It can be a challenge to withdraw their attention and focus from other things surrounding them. Fidgeting and squirming is normal as they slowly begin to not pay attention to what the child is doing next to them, what toys are on the floor around them and watching what their peers are doing.
Give each child a feather and let them sit quietly and gaze at their feather. Ask them to notice it’s colours, how big/small it is, it’s shape, does it feel soft or sharp, see how fluffy it looks, etc.
The focus of this is to get the childs mind to being to concentrate on one object and to release any other thoughts that may be trying to take their focus away from the feather. There are so many fun things that we can use feathers for in a yoga class! Check out these other ways you can use feathers in some yoga fun HERE.
